Casa Beach (also known as the Children’s
Pool) gives a whole new meaning to “close to nature.” This amazing site has been home to harbor seals for hundreds
of years (see information
provided by the Natural Resources and Culture Committee). Nowhere else in the country can we come so close to over 200 seals living in their natural
habitat. We can all enjoy this educational opportunity and explore the great views of the seals from the sea wall
adjacent to the beach.
The seals are now in danger of losing their home. A
court decision has ordered the City to make Casa Beach exclusively for public use and remove the seals. A rope
guideline that used to protect the seals year round from harassment is scheduled to be taken down after pupping
season, and the city plans to dredge the beach and get
rid of the seals. Please read the history and controversy from the website of La Jolla Friends of the Seals.
As stated in the article by the Oakland Tribune, the choice
isn't "seals or people." If you're one of the majority of people
who want the seals to stay, aren't you "people" too? Why not leave this ONE SMALL Southern California
beach to the seals and the majority of people and children who love them?
Here are links to a video that was made by Friends of the La Jolla Seals showing the peaceful seals in their natural home and
explaining the situation, another video showing harassment of the seals, and lastly, an
unbelievable
video aired on News 10 showing people kicking, throwing stones at,
and generally treating the seals like they're playthings to be used for human amusement.
What YOU can do to Protect the Seals:
Please write to the California Fish & Game Commission to let them know that you want Casa Beach to be made
into a Marine Protected Area (MPA) and given protection accordingly. For your convenience, you can use this letter.
Just print it off, fill in your address and the date, print your name and sign.
The California Fish & Game Commission's mailing address, fax number, and email address are provided in the
letter, so you have a choice: You can either snail-mail, fax, or copy and paste into an email.
In addition, please print this letter to Senator Christine Kehoe asking her to sponsor legislation to protect the seals. Senator
Kehoe's mailing address, fax number and email address are in the letter, so you can choose the method of delivery.
Please take the time to send BOTH letters!
What's needed is MANY LETTERS. Please
complete and either snail-mail, fax or email your letter, and forward this link to your friends, family members,
associates and acquaintances and ask them to write letters and forward to their databases also. Every letter counts.
Each person’s letters are urgently needed. ALSO: You can print these action cards on
Avery 8371 business card paper, separate them and hand them to friends, distribute at events, and post on public
bulletin boards.
